If you need a walking cane for support, or a cane has been prescribed for you by your doctor or physical therapist, then choosing a cane is an important business. Although the canes I offer here are technically classified as "Novelty Canes" they should meet the requirements of most cane prescriptions. But, of course, you should always check with your doctor to be sure a Watchwolf Creations cane is right for you.
The most important things to consider when buying a cane are the sturdiness, or weight limitations of the cane, and the length.
I test my canes personally. I literally raise myself off the ground with one hand to be sure it will hold all of my 200 pounds. So, in this way, I offer that my canes are rated for 200 pounds. They are most likely able to support more than that but I can only guarantee them for 200 pounds.
In order to select a cane the right length for you, ideally, if requiring a walking cane as a mobility aid, consult a Physical Therapist to determine the proper length. Otherwise, please carefully follow the proceeding guidelines to determine the proper cane length. It is strongly recommended that you have someone assist you when measuring for the proper cane length for the first time.
The length of the cane is measured from where your palm rests on the handle, straight down to the floor, including the rubber tip. There are three accepted ways to measure the proper length of your cane:
1. Measure the size of an existing cane.
Do this method by simply
measuring from the lowest part on the top of the handle to the bottom
of the rubber tip. Round up to the nearest half inch.
2. Measure the cane user
a. Put on the user’s walking shoes.
b. Have the user stand naturally upright as much as possible.
c. Have their arms fall to the sides naturally with a normal relaxed bend at the elbow.
d. Using a tape measure or yard stick, measure the
distance from their wrist joint (bottom crease at the wrist) down to
the floor. Round up to the nearest half inch.
3. Measure half the height in inches. (Only use if Step 1 or 2 are not available as options)
Although this works for most cane users it is not always exact. Most users cane measurements will be within one inch of half the users height.
a. Convert height into inches...(example 66 Inches) then divide in half = 33 inches. (Round up to the nearest half inch.)
b. Then add half an inch to this height. The estimated height would be 33.5 inches for this example.
I want you to enjoy your Watchwolf Creations walking canes. But most of all I want it to be safe and comfortable for you.
